FM spokesperson: China-Russia delimitation agreement example for settling border disputes
font size

The delimitation agreement between China and Russia serves as a successful example for settling border disputes, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhang Qiyue in Beijing Tuesday.

China and Russia signed the Supplementary Agreement on the Eastern Section of China-Russia Boundary Line on behalf of their respective governments in Beijing on Oct. 14, which both Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin say indicates the two countries have completed delimitation of their 4,300-kilometer-long boarder.

While describing the agreement as a "balanced and reasonable" and "politically win-win" solution, Zhang said it was reached on the basis of equal and friendly consultation and is of "great significance."

The agreement lays a sound legal foundation for China and Russia to further develop relations in all fields and offers a reliable guarantee for the friendship and good-neighborly cooperation between the two countries, Zhang said.

"It is not only a great benefit to the two peoples, but also an important contribution to peace and stability in the region and the world at large," she said.

The delimitation agreement and other border-related agreements will create new favorable conditions for joint actions in environmental protection, utilization of natural resources, shipping, economic cooperation, and security and stability in the border areas, Zhang said.

China and Russia signed two border agreements in 1991 and 1994,delimiting the eastern and western sections of the boundary line between them, leaving only two parts of land in the eastern section to be resolved.

Negotiations between China and Russia on the boundary line lasted more than 40 years. The pace was greatly accelerated after the two countries singed a good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation in 2001.
