font size

The Turkish Cypriot government headed by Ali Talat submitted the resignation to the tiny enclave'sPresident Rauf Denktas on Wednesday morning, which has been accepted, semi-official Anatolia News Agency reported.

Denktas told reporters that he will decide soon who will form the new government, said the report, adding Talat and his foreign minister Serdar Denktas will hold a joint news conference to explain the resignation.

The minority government resigned one day after abandoning efforts to forge a new coalition, concerned officials were quoted as saying.

It was reported that Talat has been asked to remain in office until a new caretaker administration can be formed.

A general election is expected to be held in the tiny enclave, recognized only by Turkey, within 60 days.
