Chinese President and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao Friday urged caring for veteran cadres, calling them valuable wealth of the CPC and the state.

The call came when Hu made important instructions to a meeting held here for commending outstanding veteran cadres and Party branches of retired cadres.

Hu said veteran cadres have made great contributions to China'srevolution, construction and reform. Without their longtime and heroic efforts, there wouldn't have the current vigorous development of the causes of the Party and the people.

He urged Party committees and governments at various levels to properly deal with the work on veteran cadres and truly respect and care for them in political and ideological fields and take care of their lives.

He also called on veteran cadres to carry forward fine traditions and styles of the Party and continue to play positive roles for the causes of the Party and the people.

Zeng Qinghong, who is member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Vice-President, conveyed Hu's instructions to the meeting and made a speech on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.

Zeng underscored the remembering of the historical achievementsand tremendous contributions of veteran cadres and keeping of the fine traditions and lofty spirits of veteran cadres, adding that policies on respecting, learning from and caring for veteran cadres will never change.

The meeting, held on the Chinese Elderly's Day or the Double Ninth Festival (the 9th day of the 9th lunar month), commended 400veteran cadres and 150 Party branches of retired cadres.
