Powell reaffirms one-China policy
font size

US Secretary of State Colin Powell reaffirmed in Beijing on October 25 Washington's one-China policy and its commitment to three Sino-US joint Communiques.

"I reiterated that our (the United States) policy was based on one China, three Communiques," he told a press conference after meeting respectively with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.

Powell, who arrived here Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit to China, reaffirmed while meeting with the Chinese leaders that the United States will unswervingly pursue the one-China policy and oppose any action aiming at "Taiwan independence".

During the meeting, Hu told Powell that opposition to "Taiwan independence" and curbing risky activities of "Taiwan independence" forces are in the common interests of both China and the United States, and the Asian-Pacific countries.

The Chinese president said he hopes the US side to see clearly the nature and serious harm of the "Taiwan independence" forces and really turn its promises on the Taiwan question into concrete actions, which is crucial to safeguarding peace and stability

across the Taiwan Straits and in the Asian-Pacific region, and the sound and stable development of Sino-US relations.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Thursday that China has always required the United States to abide by its commitments on the Taiwan issue, which has been reaffirmed time and again by US leaders and administrations.

China also called on the United States to stop official contact with Taiwan in any form, cease arms sales to Taiwan and US-Taiwan military links and send no wrong signal to the Taiwan authorities, Zhang said.
