According to the yearbook 2004 on China's large-scale real estate and building enterprises published recently by the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2003, the number of enterprises for real estate development reached 37,123, which completed 1,015.4 billion yuan investment in real estate development, with total enterprise assets valued 4,048.6 billion yuan, total business income 913.7 billion yuan and total profits 50.6 billion yuan.
Statistics showed that China had altogether 48,688 construction enterprises, which completed a total output value of 2,308.4 billion yuan, with total enterprise assets valued 2,354.2 billion yuan, total income 2,203.7 billion yuan and total profits 52 billion yuan.
The added value of real estate sector and building sector accounted for 2.0 percent and 6.9 percent of GDP respectively. The GDP proportion of building industry, in particular, hit a record high since the founding of New China in 1949, which was next only to industry, agriculture and business. Building industry has gradually become one of the pillar industries of the national economy.
