Indian, Bangladeshi border guards exchange fire
font size

Indian and Bangladeshi frontier guards Wednesday fired on each other after a dispute over the nationality of a group of people stranded on the border, according to Indo-Asian News Service (IANS).

Indian guards claimed that they stopped a group of Bangladeshis from crossing over illegally into India Tuesday night and were "pushing them back" when Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel opened fire.

There was no report of any casualty on either side.

The skirmish took place near the Tiapara in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, 700 km north of Kolkata.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096-km border, the demarcation of which is disputed over a 6.1-km stretch.
