DNA identification has become increasingly popular in China, especially in south China's port city of Shenzhen.
Statistics show 50 percent more people are seeking DNA identification every year since 2001.
Eighty to ninety percent of the applications are made by ordinary Chinese parents, while others are made by judicial departments. A large portion of the applicants are from Hong Kong or Macao.
The main reason for DNA testing is to prove or disprove paternity and identify the fathers of illegitimate children. This reflects the incidence of mistrust between couples and premarital sex in the city, which has a large number of immigrants and is near both Hong Kong and Macao.
The number of applicants is expected to keep rising.
