Specialist says SARS threat lessened
font size

A top SARS specialist in China believes that any new SARS infections in southern China during winter will not spread on a large scale.

Doctor Zhong Nanshan made the comment Friday, responding to a recent national call for prevention measures against SARS and bird flu.

But Zhong said that because of the policies already implemented throughout Guangdong, there had been great progress in SARS prevention strategies.

He suggested an early reporting and treatment system and flu vaccinations were helpful in combating SARS as well as the more deadly bird flu.

Due to his extraordinary contribution to SARS treatment, Doctor Zhong was awarded "The Outstanding Honor Prize for Guangzhou Medical School" the same day.
