Karzai elected president of Afghanistan

Hamid Karzai has been elected president of Afghanistan in the country's first-ever direct presidential elections, the joint UN-Afghan election commission announced Wednesday.

The commission announced that Karzai has won a five-year term after he gained 55.4 percent of some 8 million valid votes in the polls held on Oct. 9.
