The fourth session of the theme seminar of "China Science and Humanities Forum" sponsored by the Graduation School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was held at the Great Hall of the People on November 4. At the seminar, Wang Qishan, mayor of Beijing, delivered a speech titled "Beijing Olympics and China's Peaceful Development".

Wang noted that hosting an Olympics was a complicated system project. Although every field of preparatory work is now going on smoothly, we can't expect too much of it. It is time for us to immerse ourselves in hard work. We have confidence in our sure success, and we must succeed.

Wang said that holding the Olympics is an opportunity and realizing development is our goal. For years, the municipal Party committee and government have put forward the strategic concept of "New Beijing, New Olympics", the strategic objective of "taking the lead to basically achieve socialist modernization" as well as the three ideas of "Green Olympics, Scientific Olympics and Humanity Olympics". Through holding the Olympic Games, we display the great achievements in China's socialist modernization drive made ever since the launch of the reform and opening up program, exhibit the broadmindedness, traditional virtue and modern graceful bearing of the Chinese nation, and demonstrate the Chinese people's determination and wishes for realization of peaceful development.

Wang held that the "Green Olympics, Scientific Olympics and Humanity Olympics" have rich and profound meanings. "Green Olympics" not merely means the adding of some green fields, in essence it means sustainable development and environmental protection; "Scientific Olympics" is not merely a technological problem but means solving various problems arising in the hosting of the Olympics by a scientific method and in a scientific spirit. "Humanity Olympics" means infiltrating the human spirit into the Olympic Games and promoting improvement of human quality through the games. "Humanity Olympics" is the core of the organic unity of the three major ideas.
