White-collar women in Shanghai drink too much

About 35 percent of women surveyed by a Shanghai women's hospital suffer from diseases caused by excessive drinking.

China Daily reports that about 35 percent of women surveyed by a Shanghai women's hospital suffer from diseases caused by excessive drinking,

indicating alcohol problems have become a serious threat to the health of women in the city.

According to the article, the survey defined excessive drinking as getting drunk at least once a week and drinking at least three or four times a week, with this pattern persisting for at least one year.

The hospital surveyed over 10,000 women, ranging in age from 17 to 65.

About half of those surveyed have a university education. And the majority admitted they drink due to high stress and at work-related functions, such as having business dinners with clients.

The article says that with the increase in the pace of life, most white-collar women face the added pressure of caring for a family as well as work-related stress - something which was a contributing factor in their choice to drink regularly.
