Spain to improve relations with US

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said Spain will seek an improvement in the relations with the United States.

Moratinos told local television on Thursday that he made clear the position in a call to his US counterpart Colin Powell, and expressed Spain's willingness to work with the United States as anally and friend. The reaction of the US side was "very positive", he added.

The European Union (EU) is willing to make great efforts to understand what the American people have suffered after the September 11 attacks, Moratinos said. "The United States also has to understand what the EU stands for and we are going to face great challenges."

If the two sides remain divided, the international community and the West will have more difficulties to meet the challenges, Moratinos stressed.

The withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq after the installation of a Socialist government upset the United States.
