France says the European Union and Iran have made "considerable progress" towards reaching a preliminary agreement on Tehran's nuclear program at talks in Paris.

Iran sought a compromise at talks on Saturday with Britain, France and Germany to avoid a dispute over its nuclear program being referred to the United Nations Security Council and to avert the risk of sanctions, China Radio International reported Sunday.

An Iranian negotiator said some problems remained on the second day of talks in Paris, but he still hoped an understanding could be reached with the European trio, who want to persuade Tehran to stop enriching uranium.

Iran resumed its third round of talks on its nuclear program with Britain, France and Germany on Friday in Pairs, and the originally scheduled one-day talk was prolonged to Saturday. Enditem
