US animation studio Pixar played its magic again as its latest action spoof "The Incredibles" racked up about 70.6 million US dollars in its weekend debut at North America box office, according to preliminary figures released Sunday.
This is more than the expected weekend take of the other top 10 films combined, and set the second best debut record for weekend opening among animated flicks, just behind "Shrek 2's" debut record of 108 million dollars.
"Incredibles" is the sixth release from the cooperation between Pixar and Walt Disney, which have enjoyed huge successes with their computer animated movies going back to 1995's original "Toy Story."
The most recent Pixar/Disney film was "Finding Nemo," which debuted in May last year with a take of 70.3 million dollars. Pixar and Disney have halted their cooperation due to the dispute over dividing the earnings.
Meanwhile, the biopic "Ray" remained in second place, earning about 13.8 million dollars.
Horror thriller "The Grudge," leader of the past two weekends, dropped to third place with an expected take of 13.5 million dollars.
Rounding up the Top Five were crime thriller "Saw," which took the No. 4 place with 11.4 million dollars, and the debut of "Alfie," which earned about 6.5 million dollars.
Overall sales for the top 12 films slipped 5 percent to 136.1 million dollars from 143.7 million dollars last year, according to estimates.
The final box office figures are due to be released on Monday.
