Vietnam has succeeded in disposing a bomb weighing 5.5 tons, the biggest bomb found in Indochina, local media reported Monday.
Six local army engineers Sunday took 3.5 tons of explosive out of the bomb dropped by the US army in the central highlands province of Gia Lai in the Vietnam War. Earlier, they had to dig hundreds of cubic meters of soil and rock.
The once biggest bomb found in the country is displayed at the Vietnam People's Army Museum. It weights nearly 1.4 tons.
During the war, the United States troops used nearly 15.4 million tons of bombs, mines and shells, of which exploded ordnance (UXO) accounts for 2-5 percent. There are over 300,000 tons of UXO in Vietnam.
Local scrap collectors often saw UXOs for metal and explosive, while small children play ammunitions by breaking them, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries annually.
