China's grain production this year expected to exceed 455 billion kgAs this year's autumn grain harvest coming to an end, the State Council announced at a regular meeting that China's grain production increase this year is now a foregone conclusion and the whole-year production is expected to exceed the pre-set goal. The goal laid for grain production in 2004 is 455 billion kg. Among concerns over China's grain security caused by output decline in many consecutive years, the country's 900 million farmers achieved the crucial goal and welcomed a heavy harvest. The national grain production displays an inspiring trend. Figures from the State Statistics Bureau showed that on the base of 4.8 percent higher summer output, production of early rice reached 32.1 billion kg, an increase of 8.8 percent. The autumn grain yield is also quite encouraging. The whole-year production will be noticeably higher than last year and the 455 billion kg goal set at year beginning can be reached. The gain production this year reversed the declining trend in four consecutive years since 2000, sending an important message to whose concerned with China's food security--the country's grain output has realized a favorable turn from decline to growth.
