font size

Sixty-six illegal workers and 10 employers have been arrested in a joint Labor Department, Police and Immigration Department operation Tuesday, according to a Hong Kong government press release.

One-hundred-and-one Labor inspectors, 222 police and 18 immigration officers launched the operation at Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Food Market, raiding 36 workplaces in various districts, including interior decoration sites, eateries, waste paper processing companies, retail and wholesale stalls.

The illegal workers were found selling goods, cooking noodles, serving customers and laboring.

One was injured and hospitalized after jumping from his first floor interior decoration workplace in North Point when a labor inspector arrived.

In the first 10 months of the year, the Labor Department conducted 79 joint operations with police and immigration officers, arresting 448 illegal workers and 149 employers.

It said it will continue to strengthen intelligence collection and conduct joint operations with other enforcement agencies to tackle illegal employment.
