China applauds Vanuatu's annulling proposal for diplomatic relations with Taiwan
font size

China appreciates Vanuatu government's decision to annul its proposal to establish diplomatic relations with Taiwan, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue in Beijing on November 11 at a regular press conference.

On Nov. 10 the Vanuatu government declared that the Council of Ministers decided to annul the communique signed in Taipei on Nov.3 on Vanuatu-Taiwan ties. The government reiterated Vanuatu's adherence to Resolution 2758 of the United Nations General Assembly as well as the one-China policy included in the 1982 communique on establishing diplomatic relations between Vanuatu and the People's Republic of China (PRC), said Zhang.

Vanuatu reiterated that there is only one China in the world, Taiwan is a province of China, the PRC government is the only legitimate government representing the whole China; the Vanuatu government will not have political linkage in any form with Taiwan.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the PRC government is the sole legal government representing the whole of China," Zhang said. "This fact is recognized by more than 160 countries in the world, including Vanuatu, and all important international organizations including the United Nations."

Facts again prove that Taiwan authorities' scheme to split the motherland is not welcome by the public and not promising, she said.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to relations with Vanuatu, she said, noting the two sides have been expanding their exchanges and cooperation in various fields since the establishment of diplomatic relations 22 years ago.

Developing China-Vatuatu friendly cooperation serves the long-term and fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, she said, expressing China's willingness to join hands with Vanuatu to push forward bilateral friendly relations of cooperation on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence.
