Lithuanian president accepts symbolic resignation of premier

Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus on Monday accepted the symbolic resignation of Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas, and asked him to stay on as caretaker prime minister until a new cabinet is formed, reports reaching here said.

Under Lithuania's constitution, the government must resign after a new parliament is elected. The president will nominate a new prime minister in 15 days after the first session of the new parliament.

The new parliament, formed after two rounds of elections on Oct.10 and Oct. 24, held its first session on Monday.

The Labor Party, Social Democratic Party, Social Liberal Party,Agriculture Party and New Democratic Alliance have agreed to form a coalition government and nominated Brazauskas as new prime minister.

With over 80 seats, the coalition enjoys a comfortable majorityin the 141-seat parliament.
