Evaluation report on government website released

Websites of the State Administration of Taxation, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Audit Office have entered top ten in the ranking of websites of central ministries and commissions, according to the report on government websites 2004 newly released.

In the ranking at provincial and municipal level, Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Chongqing are the top five, while Ningxia, Shanxi, Henan, Yunnan and Heilongjiang are at the bottom. This result indicates the service level of governmental websites are closely related to economic development and opening.

Some government websites have won acclaims from users and the public for their highlights. The website of the Ministry of Commerce features strong interactive functions by providing message board, email, commercial forum and online survey. It classifies messages by its internal departments and type of business. The public praises the website for it is able to interact with the public and resolve problems without delay. Many people acclaim and encourage the website in their messages. The information on the website of the Beijing Municipal Government is informative and timely. The column, government announcement, wins a high point of 9.3 points.

Major flaws of government websites include, the service of the government website is not satisfactory; government news are not provided in a timely manner,etc. Some websites fail to provide online query service, or the service does not function at all. Users cannot communicate with the government via email, message board or forums. Insufficient functions and inferior interactive function are major problems of websites of central ministries and commissions.
