Muhsen Abdul Hamid, head of the Iraqi Islamic Party, called for postponing the general elections due in January for six months, hinting his party would go for it ifthere was a delay, the Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper reported on Sunday.

"We prepared ourselves for the elections technically, and presented a demand to the Higher Commission supervising the elections and we received certification on our application to participate," said Abdul Hamid.

"After studying the security situation in Iraq, we noticed that the severe tension would hinder the electoral operation, so we demanded the postponement for six months until there is proper security environment to hold honest and clean elections," he added.

"If our demand was not met, we might reconsider our position andwithdraw from the elections together with other political parties,"he said.

The Muslim Scholars' Association and 46 other organizations and parties announced the boycott of the coming elections, and doubted about the elections under the US occupation.
