font size

A landmine explosion has resulted in the deaths of at least ten people belonging to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels, the state television announced here Monday.

The Rupavahini TV said the landmine explosion took place at Tharavikulam in the eastern Batticaloa district around 11:00 a.m. local time (GMT 0050).

The TV said the LTTE rebels were traveling on a tractor when the landmine exploded in an area under their control, but it did not say who was responsible for the attack.

Internecine clashes between the rival LTTE factions have causedmany deaths since the LTTE's former eastern commander Karuna revolted against the leadership of the rebel leader Velupillai Prabakaran in March this year.
