font size

New York has been named the fifthsafest big city with a population of over 500,000 in the United States, according to a survey conducted by an independent private research and publishing company.

Topping the list are San Jose, El Paso, Honolulu and Austin. The rankings are based on six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft.

Among all cities, Newton, Massachusetts, is the safest in the nation, followed by Brick Township, New Jersey, Amherst, New York,Mission Viejo, California, Clarkstown, New York, and Lake Forest California. New York did not make the top 25 overall.

The most dangerous city in the nation is Camden, New Jersey. The hardscrabble city across the Delaware River from Philadelphia took the dubious honor from Detroit, which fell to second.

The report compares 350 cities with populations over 75,000 that report crime data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
