A senior Chinese official said the Chinese mainland should more deeply implement the principle of "repose the hope on the Taiwanese compatriots" and unswervingly oppose and fight the Taiwan independence forces.

During an inspection tour in Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces, Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said to achieve that goal, the mainland must enhance the relations with Taiwan compatriots by expanding exchanges and furthering cooperation. He called on all the localities on the mainland to actively and positively carry out Taiwan-bound exchanges and work hard to develop mutual benefits of the people across the Taiwan Straits and deepen the emotional links.

"Mainland governments at different levels should take care of and protect the legitimate interests and rights and safety of the Taiwan compatriots who are engaging various investment and exchange activities on the mainland," said Tang.

He viewed the Taiwan compatriots as a major force who would fight to maintain China's integrity and against the Taiwan separatists.

Tang also encouraged the mainland governments to do everything to support Taiwan compatriots, the unification of the motherland and the great rise of the Chinese nation.

"At the same time, we would also firmly adhere to the 'One China' principle and safeguard our country's sovereignty and territory integrity," he said.
