China gears up for the sixth nationwide railway speed-upAccording to the relevant railway department, China will bring into effect the sixth nationwide railway speed-up next year. By then the passenger-train speed will be up to 200 kilometers from the current 60 kilometers per hour when the electrification of railway system is completed. To ensure the speed increase for passenger trains, the Ministry of Railways has made transformation in all the operational freight trains, with an aim to meet the operational speed demand of 80 kilometers per hour from the present speed of 40 kilometers per hour. The Ministry of Railways has also conducted an overall checkup on the working conditions, major operational parts and general framework of freight trains to meet the hardware requirements of the sixth national railway speed-up. Meanwhile, a large-scale checkup on iced refrigerator cars at stations, in operation and under maintenance is also underway. The ministry also reiterates that all the trains have to be registered at the relevant railway departments and the regular checkup on the trains' major operating parts has to be enhanced. As for those trains that could not meet the requirements of the railway speed-up, they will not be allowed to put into operation so that a solid foundation will be laid for the upcoming sixth nationwide railway speed-up.
