Telecommunications authorities have warned people to be on the alert for people posing as telecom workers providing door-to-door service and asking for cash payments.
The Bao'an branch of the municipal telecom bureau said their door-to-door workers did not ask for cash because customers were required to pay through bank transfer or at telecom offices, the Daily Sunshine reported Monday.
On Saturday, a man was caught posing as a manager with the Shajing telecom service center in Bao'an District, the newspaper said. The manager, surnamed Liao, said he had been aware the imposter was operating but had not been able to trace him.
When Liao was sent to a store to repair equipment, he found a motorcycle labeled "China Telecom" parked outside, but the vehicle was not the type used by telecom workers. The shop assistant said another man calling himself Manager Liao was working inside. Liao then called police.
The man had allegedly been cheating people out of service fees in Shajing Sub-district.
