Aftermath work for N. China iron mine fire ends

All families but one of the 68 victims have received compensations following a deadly iron mine fire on Nov. 20 in Shahe City in north China's Hebei Province.

The local government declared Tuesday the aftermath work of the tragedy had basically ended.

All the family members of the victims have been carefully received and the city has raised enough fund to ensure they could obtain compensations in time, said Hu Chunxing, a local official in charge of publicity.

The bottom line is set at 48,000 yuan (5,783 US dollars) to each bereft families and compensations will be adjusted according to actual situations, Hu said.

The bodies were being cremated and the family members of the victims were returning to their hometowns, Hu said.

Fire hit five iron mines in Baita County in Shahe City on Nov. 20, trapping 106 miners and claiming 68 lives.
