Singapore PM elected head of ruling party

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has been elected Secretary-General of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).

According to local press reports on Thursday night, the PAP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) voted for the change in line with changes of the political leadership.

Lee replaced Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who had been holding the position of PAP Secretary-General since 1992.

Also changed is the party chairman. Labor chief Lim Boon Heng, who was formerly the treasurer, is now party chairman, with assistant treasurer Yaacob Ibrahim elected vice-chairman. Their predecessors are Tony Tan and S. Jayakumar.

Wong Kan Seng is now the First Assistant Secretary-General and Rear-Admiral Teo Chee Hean the Second Assistant Secretary-General,while Mah Bow Tan becomes the treasurer with Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam as his assistant.

Four others, who were also elected into the CEC, are Ng Eng Hen,Ho Peng Kee, Madam Halimah Yaacob and Teo Ho Pin.
