Commissioner of foreign affairs in HK condemns US Congressman's speech

A spokesman for the office of the commissioner of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region condemned the speeches delivered by US Congressman Henry J. Hyde Friday.

The spokesman said Hyde's speech viciously attacked China's development and progress, and insulted China's foreign policy from his own cold-war view, noting China is strongly dissatisfied with it.

Hyde on Thursday made a speech entitled "Hong Kong, China and the World" during his four-day visit to Hong Kong under the invitation of US-based Heritage Foundation.

The spokesman said it is widely acknowledged that China's development is not only in the fundamental interests of 1.3 billion Chinese people, but also contributes to the world prosperity and progress.

He said, China is a responsible country on the world political stage, and has played a positive and constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in the world.

China has strictly abided by the relevant international agreements on the nuclear issue, firmly opposed the nuclear proliferation in whatever forms, and advocated to resolve such issues through negotiation, talks and strengthened international administration, the spokesman added.

However, the spokesman noted that it is a pity that Hyde neglected these facts and made such an irresponsible speech at the time when the Sino-US bilateral relations is heading to a more healthy and stable future.

The spokesman said Hyde's speech was not in line with the views shared by the US president and Chinese president recently to develop the bilateral ties, contradicted with the demand of the majority Americans to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries, and will undoubtedly do harm to the Sino-US relations.
