    Italian President starts China tour

    Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi arrived in Beijing Saturday, starting his six-day state visit to China. Before he left for China President Ciampi said that his country was willing to broaden cooperation with China in all fields and that his visit to China would push forward the bilateral friendly relations.

    Noted mathematician passes away

    Shiing-shen Chern (Chen Xingshen), a world-renowned overseas Chinese mathematician, 93, died of illness at his home at Nankai University in north China's Tianjin Municipality at around 7:15 p.m. Friday. Students pay tribute to him.
