The Kosovo parliament on Friday elected former rebel leader Ramush Haradinaj, an ethnic Albanian, as prime minister of the UN-controlled southern Serbian province.
Haradinaj, 36, was a senior leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during the 1998-99 war against Serbian forces. He has recently been questioned by the UN International Criminal Tribunalfor the former Yugoslavia, which sits in The Hague.
Haradinaj was nominated for prime minister by Kosovo president Ibrahim Rugova following the Oct. 23 parliamentary polls.
Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) formed a coalition with Haradinaj's smaller Alliance for the Future of Kosovo after the parliamentary elections.
