HKU establishes five strategic research centers

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) announced the establishment of five medical research centers here Friday at the "Frontiers in Biomedical Research, HKU 2004" meeting.

According to the Faculty of Medicine of HKU, organizer of the meeting, the five centers have got a strategic research theme each involving cancer; heart, brain, hormone and healthy aging; infection and immunology; public health; and reproduction, development and growth.

The faculty said, with the establishment of the research centers, it was anticipated that resources and talents can be more focused and experts from basic and clinical research are encouraged to work together, thus leading to inspiration of new initiatives and enhanced synergy of multi-discipline collaboration.

A total of 50 million HK dollars was allocated by the faculty as seed capital for the establishment of the research centers.

The third annual meeting is an annual flagship event of the Faculty of Medicine of HKU with local and overseas experts from different disciplines to share their latest medical and scientific research discoveries.
