HK Customs seizes 10.5 kg of cocaine from passenger at airport

Hong Kong Customs officers at Hong Kong International Airport has seized 10.5 kilograms of cocaine from a Hong Kong passenger from Peru.

According to a press release from the Customs and Excise Department Sunday, this is the largest drug trafficking case ever ferreted out at Hong Kong International Airport and is also the second case found at the airport in a week.

Customs officers stopped the 72-year-old man for drug checking at the entrance hall of the airport on Saturday morning, and found two bags of cocaine valued at 10.2 million HK dollars (1.31 million US dollars) in his suitcase.

The man will be charged with "trafficking in a dangerous drug" under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and will appear in a local court on Monday.

According to Hong Kong laws, the maximum penalty for the offense of "trafficking in a dangerous drug" is a fine of 5 million HK dollars and life imprisonment.
