A local official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Shaoshan, a city in central China's Hunan Province, has been detained for his involvement in a fatal traffic accident last month, local police confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
The official's posts were also suspended by the CPC city committee of Xiangtan, which governs Shaoshan.
Liu Yahui, deputy secretary of the CPC Shaoshan committee and secretary of the committee's disciplinary commission, allegedly ran over a man who was knocked down by a motorcycle the evening of November 27.
The motorcycle and Liu's car were driving in opposite directions when the accident occurred. Liu said that he was dazzled by the lights of the motorcycle.
Witnesses said Liu got out of his car, asked passers-by what happened and then left the scene without trying to revive the man he hit. The victim later died in hospital.
Legal medical experts and doctors said that the blow from the motorcycle injured the man, but the Liu's car delivered the fatal blow. The car collision fractured the victim's ribs and injured his liver and kidney, the authentication showed.
Liu was also said to have washed the car after leaving the scene.
Liu said that he "felt very sorry and regretful and was willing to accept disciplinary punishment."
The motorcycle driver and his passenger, a hitchhiker, who also fled the scene, were also detained.
