A US-appointed man on nuclear issue met with his South Korean counterpart in Seoul on Wednesday to discuss how to resume the stalled six-party nuclear talks.
"I hope we will resume these talks very quickly," Joseph DeTrani said at the start of his meeting with Cho Tae-yong, head of the South Korean Foreign Ministry's task force on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
DeTrani was referring to the stalled six-nation talks that involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, Russia, South Korea and Japan. The dialogue process has been held up for more than five months after three rounds of inconclusive sessions.
"I think this is a very important meeting," Cho said. "This demonstrates our common efforts to rejuvenate the long overdue talks process. I'm sure today's talks will be a very good discussion that will help us to bring about our common objective."
DeTrani and Cho both serve as deputy chiefs of their respective countries' delegations to the nuclear talks.
The US diplomat reportedly met with the DPRK's officials twice in New York last week to tell them Washington is committed to a diplomatic resolution of the nuclear issue.
DeTrani arrived in Seoul earlier Wednesday for a two-day visit.A meeting with Park Chan-bong, South Korea's deputy assistant unification minister, is also planned before DeTrani's departure on Thursday evening.
