Blast kills 10 in southwestern Pakistan
font size

At least 10 people were killed and 21 others wounded in a powerful bomb blast Friday in Quetta, capital of Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, state-run Pakistan TV reported.

The device went off in the busy Meezan Chowk commercial district in Quetta at 4:15 p.m. local time and the explosive material weighed about 15 to 20 kilograms, said the report.

The blast killed at least 10 people including an army man. The injured have been shifted to a civil hospital where emergency has been declared.

The blast also wrecked four vehicles including a military truck and smashed glasses of the nearby shops.

The army and police cordoned off the area and diverted the traffic and stopped people from going to the site. No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Information Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said the government condemned what he called "a heinous act of terrorism."

He said it was too early to allot blame for the blast, but added "The people responsible will not go unpunished."
