Scholars urged to study more on socialism

Li Shenming, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), said in Beijing on December 14 that Chinese scholars should do more research on the development trends and theories of world socialism, which could be useful for China's development.

At a symposium on world socialism marking the tenth anniversary of the CASS World Socialism Research Center, Li said although it is still at its low tide, socialism and related studies begin to revive in the world.

In their studies on world socialism, Chinese scholars should combine theories of Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the "Three Represent's" thinking concluded by Jiang Zemin, Li said.

In 1994, the central authorities decided to establish the research center, organized by the Communist Party of China Central Committee Department of Publicity and with the CASS as its backbone.

The center organized scholars to study Mikhail Gorbachev and Leonid Brezhnev, both former leaders of the Soviet Union.

Li urged scholars working for the center to expand their visions and find more historic materials in the studies.

Scholars attending the symposium discussed causes of the sudden change in the 1990s in the Soviet Union and East European communist countries.
