Americans will travel in record numbers this holiday season, thanks partly to Christmas and New Year's landing on the weekend, the AAA (American Automobile Association) said Wednesday in releasing a travel survey.

About 63 million in the United States will travel more than 50 miles from home during the holidays. That is about 21% of the U.S. population of about 295 million, according to AAA.

This year's travel estimate is up 3% from last year.

"With Christmas and New Year's Day both falling on Saturdays, many people will make weekend getaways to be with friends and family," said Sandra Hughes, AAA travel vice president.

The survey was conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America for the AAA. About 1,400 adults participated.

About 50.9 million -- 81% of travelers -- will go by auto, up 3% from last year. About 8.6 million will fly, up 3.5%, and about 3.2 million will go by train, bus or another way, up 5% from last year, the AAA said.

Gasoline prices nationwide average about $1.84 a gallon, 37 cents higher than last year but down 13 cents from a month ago.

AAA's leisure travel index shows holiday airfares are 6% below last year's levels, pushed down by more routes being covered by the discount airlines.

Despite recent price increases, holiday hotel rates are down 1.4% from last year. Rental car rates are up 2.3%.

About one in four holiday travelers will go to "true winter vacation destinations like beaches and mountains," Hughes said.

Most holiday travelers will visit the homes of relatives or friends, while 25% will stay in hotels or motels.

The AAA is largest motoring and leisure travel organization in North America.
