HK LegCo members' bills to be dealt with according to Basic Law: spokesman

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government will deal with the bills put forward by members of Legislative Council (LegCo) in strict accordance with the relevant Basic Law provisions, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

In response to media inquiries concerning the "Referendum Bill" put forward by a LegCo member recently, the spokesman confirmed that the HKSAR government has not received the text of the bill. Article 74 of the Basic Law clearly stipulates that members of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region may introduce bills in accordance with the provisions of the Basic Law and legal procedures, said the spokesman. Bills which do not relate to public expenditure or political structure or the operation of the government may be introduced individually or jointly by members of the Council, he said. The written consent of the Chief Executive shall be required before bills relating to government policies are introduced, headed.
