Career takes a back seat
font size

A survey has revealed that a large percentage of Shanghai women consider it's better to marry well than succeed professionally.

The Shanghai-based Xinmin Evening News reports the survey, conducted by the Shanghai Municipal Women's Federation, quizzed up to 1,000 young and educated women in the city.

More than 65 percent of the interviewees agree with the old Chinese saying: to perform well professionally is good, but to marry well is better.

Behind this attitude, experts suggest that there are factors imposed by a male-dominated society, such as the glass ceilings women encounter in the workplace.
