President Hu urges HKSAR to take concerted efforts for development

President Hu Jintao Monday called on the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and people from all walks of life to focus on HK's overall and long-term interest as well the interest of the whole nation.

He made the remarks while meeting with HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, who came here to attend the celebrations of the 5th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

Hu said that after more than one year's efforts by Tung Chee Hwa and the HKSAR government, together with the support of the central government, Hong Kong has been developing on a sound track.The central government has a positive assessment of what Tung Chee Hwa and the HKSAR government have done, he said.

The president said that the HKSAR government and Hong Kong people should enhance unity, take concerted efforts and support each other in order to consolidate and further develop the present sound situation in Hong Kong.

He also urged the HKSAR government to enhance the people-oriented sense in its administration, push ahead with economic development, improve people's livelihood and positively respond to the issues of common concern.

The president also called on the HKSAR government to earnestly review the process of its implementation of the principles of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" with a high degree of autonomy and further improve the governance, in a bid to better administrate and build Hong Kong.

The president listened to Tung's report on his work and also met with principal officials of the HKSAR government.

Hu Jintao pledged that the central government will make every possible effort to provide whatever support and assistance the HKSAR government expects it to do.

Tung Chee Hwa thanked the central government and the mainland for their care and support for Hong Kong's development.

Tung said that his government will continue to administer affairs according to law, improve the governance, unite the Hong Kong people and make efforts to maintain prosperity and stability in Hong Kong.

Among those present at the meeting were Wang Gang, alternative member of the Political Bureau, member of the Secretariat and director of the General Office, of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee; Tang Jiaxuan, state councilor; Liao Hui, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference and head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office under the State Council; and Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Present at the meeting were Hong Kong Chief Secretary for Administration Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen, and other principal officials of the HKSAR government.

Macao SAR Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah was also present at the meeting.
