President Hu urges Macao people to focus on common cause of development

President Hu Jintao expected the Macao people to continue to hold high the banner of loving the motherland and loving Macao, in an effort to build a better Macao.

He made the remarks here Monday afternoon during his meeting with well-known personages from various sectors in Macao.

The president attributed the economic and social development of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) in the past five years to the conscientious implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle by the public, under the leadership of the Macao SAR government headed by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah.

Hu also attributed the achievements to the mutual understanding and concerted efforts made by people from various walks of life in Macao.

The president said so long as having a harmonious social environment and focusing the public's enthusiasm on the common cause of building a better Macao, all difficulties will be overcome.

Hu praised the celebrities for making important contributions to the smooth transition of Macao's return to the motherland and for maintaining Macao's prosperity and stability.

Hu expected them to continue to play a major role in supporting the Macao SAR government in administration by law and helping promote unity among all social strata and all walks of life.

The president stressed that Macao has been playing an important role in the country's modernization drive and realization of the nation's complete reunification.

He said that the central government has been attaching great importance to Macao and pledged it will continue to spare no effort to support Macao's development.

Ma Man Kei, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Macao Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, principal officials of the Macao SAR government, members of the Macao Executive Council and Legislative Assembly were present at the meeting.

On a separate occasion, President Hu Jintao met with representatives of the representative offices of the central government and mainland enterprises. He urged them to continue to support the Macao SAR government's administration by law and help promote Macao's sound development situation.

President Hu ended his two-day tour of Macao Monday afternoon. He came to Macao to attend a celebration gathering marking the 5th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the second-term government of the Macao SAR.
