A senior official of the Republic of Korea (ROK) made it clear Tuesday that the ROK will stick to the one-China policy in any circumstance.
Chung Dong-young, s pecial envoy of ROK President Roh Moo-hyun and head of the National Security Council, made the remark during his meeting with Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China.
During his meeting with Chung, Wu emphasized that the Taiwan issue concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and is among the core interests of China.
Wu said the Chinese government is willing to adopt the greatest sincerity and make the utmost effort to seek the prospect of peaceful reunification of the country. However, he said China willabsolutely not allow anyone to separate Taiwan from China.
On the issue of Taiwan, Chung said the ROK fully understands and supports the policy and proposition of the Chinese government on peaceful reunification of the country.
He promised that the ROK will stick to its one-China policy andhonor its commitments on the Taiwan issue in any circumstance.
At the invitation of Chinese Foreign Ministry, Chung began his three-day visit to China Tuesday.
During his meeting with Chairman Wu, Chung presented a letter written by President Roh Moo-hyun to Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Wu commended the development of Sino-ROK relations, and said China is willing to further deepen the all-round cooperative partnership with the ROK. Chung also highly praised the growth of bilateral ties and said he believed the growth momentum will continue.
