China to increase top-level nodes for "dot CN" connection
font size

China plans to increase the distribution of top level nodes to smooth the connection with web sites ending with "dot CN" in more regions. The domain name of "dot CN" is the only Internet address system registered and managed by China and is considered a top-level domain name.

In network terminology, node means a processing location. It serves as a Data Link Control address and a Media Access Control Address. At present, there are only four top level nodes within in China's network, distributed in major cities with better infrastructure facilities.

Director of China Internet Information Center Mao Wei said, "The level of Internet technology development and the demand of Internet users will be the most important criteria in the selection of new node location. "

Under the plan, 3 to 4 new top-level nodes will be determined by the end of 2005. The move is believed to benefit the rapidly growing number of Internet users, or Netizens in the country.

General Manager of Shanghai Information Industry Group Shen Hongbo said, "The increase of node locations in Shanghai will make Internet connection in the city much faster. Users will find it much easier to open a web page and go to other useful links. "

On the other hand, China has tightened its regulatory hold on dot-CN domain registration. Registrars should have a minimum of one million yuan in start-up capital, at least 15 employees and offer 24-hour customer service.
