Saudi withdraws ambassador to Libya over assassination plot
font size

Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday it has recalled its ambassador to Libya and would expel the Libyan envoy to protest against Tripoli's alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz.

"We have asked our ambassador in Libya to come (back) and we will hand a memorandum to the Libyan ambassador asking him to leave," Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud al-Faisal told reporters here.

He noted the move was related to "the Libyan plot to which the kingdom was subjected."

The alleged plot against Crown Prince Abdullah came into light first in a case against a prominent American Muslim activist who was sentenced earlier this year to the maximum 23 years in prison.

He was convicted of illegal business dealings with Libya and being involved in a plan to kill the crown prince.Tripoli has denied involvement in such a conspiracy.Saud al-Faisal said Saudi Arabia was not taking more retaliatory measures against Libya at the moment.
