Observers arrive for Ukraine election
font size

Hundreds of election observers began arriving in Ukraine on Wednesday ahead of the December 26 rescheduled presidential election.

Representatives from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Canadian Observer Mission, led by former Canadian Prime Minister John Turner, arrived at Kiev's main airport in the late afternoon.

Ukrainian officials are expecting a record number of observers from all over the world.

Jerry Grafstein is a Canadian Senator and OSCE observer:

"We're going to have more observers to this election than of any other election I can think of in OSCE history. We're going to have over 1,000 OSCE representatives. I've also come with a Canadian delegation of, I think, about 400. The United States, I've been told, has 1,000, the Poles have 1,000. We're going to be a number of independent observers in each of the 3,300 polls in the country, so I think it would be very difficult to rig this election."

The US is also sending 60 observers with the OSCE mission.

A 30-member Russian parliamentary delegation will also be present at the election.

The Ukrainian Supreme Court declared invalid the results of the second round and set an electoral re-run for Sunday, December 26th.
