Chinese nationals have topped the list of legal migrant workers who arrived in Tanzania in the past three years, according to statistics from the Tanzanian labor ministry.
Chinese account for 456 of the 3,759 legal migrant workers from97 countries, revealed a report presented by the ministry in Arusha, northern Tanzania, to a labor project co-sponsored by the International Labor Organization, the East African Community and the European Union.
Second on the list is South Africa with 384 legal migrant workers, followed by Kenya and Britain with 343 and 234 legal migrant workers respectively.
The same report listed trade as the number one sector in Tanzania that has attracted foreign workers, followed by manufacturing, building and construction.
Almost one fifth, or 715 to be exact, of the migrant workers are employed in the trade sector. Manufacturing, building and construction employ 561 and 549 migrant workers respectively.
