Chinese captain Zheng Zhi has failed to impress Southampton manager Harry Redknapp in his seven-day trial at the English premier league club.
Having run the rule over the 24-year-old, Redknapp decided not to pursue his interest and will continue scanning the market for fresh talent.
"You could see he was a good player, but he was not quite what we were looking for," said Redknapp of Zheng on Thursday.
"The position we are in, we are looking for somebody who can come in and do a job, we really need someone with premiership experience." he added.
The club currently rank second from bottom at the 20-team league table, collecting 13 points from 18 games with only 2 wins.
Redknapp, who took over at the Saints early this month, faces a daunting task of saving Southampton from relegation.
He has said that he needs five players in the January transfer window but ruled out going abroad for players.
"I would rather get players that have played here rather than go abroad at the moment, that is a big gamble," he said.
