Unknown men assailed a public bus in northern Honduras on Thursday, killing at least 23 passengers, the Honduran La Prensa newspaper reported on its Web site.

The shooting occurred near the northern city of San Pedro Sula, 180 km north of the capital Tegucigalpa, the report said.

It was not clear what promoted the crime and how many people were aboard the bus.
