A leading official in charge of China's security sector called for safeguarding people's rights to participation, supervision and suggestion, in an effort to ensure stability through grassroots democracy.
"Fairness makes safety and harmony," said Luo Gan during his recent trip to east China's Jiangsu Province.
Luo, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, made the call during his visit in Jiangsu Province, east China, between Dec.23-26. He is also secretary of the CPC Central Committee's Political and Legislative Committee.
Law enforcement departments should make "substantial efforts" to improve, to help build a "stable and harmonious society," Luo said.
He urged these departments to carry out law enforcement tasks by the principles of democracy, science and law. Public opinion must be sought on matters related to the interests of the people, he said.
Over the past few days, Luo has toured Nantong, Suzhou, Wuxi and Nanjing cities in Jiangsu, visiting a number of local courts, procuratorates and police stations.
